They “laid siege to hell” to get to Dean, and Sam was in a supposedly locked tight cage.
From Man Who Would be King:
And so I knew what I had to do next. Once again, I went to Harrow Hell, to free Sam from Lucifer’s cage. It was nearly impossible, but I was so full of confidence, of mission. I see now that was arrogance…Hubris…Because, of course, I hadn’t truly raised Sam — not all of him.(flashback to ‘Unforgiven’: Sam is beating a cop unconscious; flashback to ‘Live Free or Twi-Hard’: Sam watches Dean being turned; flashback to ‘Appointment in Samarra’: Sam raises his dagger to stab Bobby) Sometimes we’re lucky enough to be given a warning. (back in front of Lisa’s house, Sam turns and walks away- directly past Castiel) This should have been mine.
There is a story here we aren’t getting. The wording of this is strange. I initially took it to mean that Castiel screwed up getting Sam out, and he realized this after the fact. But it doesn’t actually say that. But it also leaves no doubt that he didn’t intentionally leave Sam’s soul so he could use it or whatever. Besides, I’m fairly confident that he went to get Sam well before he spoke with Crowley, a little detail that get’s lost. He went for Sam right after he was put back together. Sam corroborates this. If I’m getting the timing right, how could there be any ulterior motive?
It’s just strange. How did he get a body out past Michael and Lucifer? Did he make a deal with them? Fight them? Coerce them? Do bodies not really exist in hell, so it wasn’t really, fully in the cage to begin with? I have a lot of vague thoughts on this, but I’m thinking Castiel had two parts to his plan, and it was only the second one that failed.
Still, given what we know of the cage, it’s a miracle Cas got any of him out of there in the first place. I really wish we got more of the story behind this, but I’m torn between thinking the writers actually thought it all through and simply haven’t give us the whole story, versus it being a plot hole they want us to gloss over. And I know where most of you would put your money.
Aye, the whole ‘the cage is impenetrable’ except lol not really… that irked me.
would add one further observation: when Cas told Crowley...was staying on as King of Hell,...
legit question/musing....maybe its because Cas...“belong” in...
How did Castiel get Sam’s soul out anyway?...Honestly, with the sudden mid-season change...
Interesting meta....hope they do sew...hole up somehow....
This is pretty much my thoughts on this topic as well…Only a lot clearer than I would have made it.
