Mulder and Scully have similarities to Sam and Dean, but I think they actually have way, way more similarities to Castiel and Dean. It’s funny because Dean is Scully.

ipretendtobeotherpeople:

Ooh! I love that you’re comparing Supernatural to X-Files. Though I mainly see things in the opposite way:

Dean = Mulder  |  Castiel = Scully

The terms I’m judging are the following:

Religion: Both Castiel and Scully are the faith-based characters in their respective series. Castiel, of course, is an angel and his father is literally God. Scully was scientifically a skeptic but when it came to religion she had 100% faith. Castiel deals with Dean’s doubts about faith similar to how Scully dealt with Mulder’s religious skepticism. Neither character has a real concrete reason to believe in God (since Cas has never seen his father) yet both are devoted and defend their faith to others.

Sacrifice:  Both Castiel and Scully are extremely strong and independent characters, yet they lose themselves with their respective partners and are willing to give it all up for them.  Castiel rebels against his brother angels, brings war to heaven, and is willing to literally die (multiple times) for Dean. Scully would die for Mulder a million times over and literally puts her life on the line for him everyday, she is willing to sacrifice as an FBI agent in episodes like Redux II where she tells him to lay all the blame on her, even when she’s deathly sick from cancer, Mulder is at the forefront of her thoughts. And on and on…

Saviors:  Both Castiel and Scully save both Dean and Mulder. Castiel quite literally pulls Dean from the flames of perdition but he encourages him to find faith in himself and believe that he is worth something.  Mulder tells Scully, “You saved me! As difficult and as frustrating as it’s been sometimes, you God-damned strict rationalism and science have saved me a thousand times over! You’ve kept me honest…you’ve made me a whole person. I owe you everything, Scully, and you owe me nothing.”

On the flip-side, Dean reminds me of Mulder in these ways:

Family: The journey pretty much begins and ends with family for both Dean and Mulder. A tragic event in both of their childhoods has molded the men they are to become and has given them a mission in life. Dean lost his mother to demons as a child and spends the rest of his life hunting for demons with his father and refers to it as the family business. Mulder lost his sister when he was a kid to what he believed was an alien abduction and became an FBI agent in part to find out what happened to her. His relentless search for the truth is ALL about his sister.

The Odd Couple: Both Dean and Castiel find their soulmates (if you will) in the oddest people. Dean, a skeptic-rough-around-the-edges-hunter finds his emotional equivalent in Castiel, a faithful-soft-around-the-edges-angel.  Similarly, Mulder, the FBI’s once upon a time “prodigy” turned recluse and joke who bases his investigation on believing in the impossible finds his emotional equivalent in Scully, a scientist and doctor who is respected in the FBI and bases her investigations on hard facts.

Sarcasm/Humor:  While both Castiel and Scully are low-key characters, both Dean and Mulder are “say what is on your mind, the second it hits you” type of characters.  They can be blunt, sarcastic and definitely get a rise of out playfully teasing others.

I also see similarities in the relationship between Dean/Cas and Mulder/Scully.

Belief System: To the outside world, neither of these pairings make sense or seem to fit, yet they fit perfectly with each other predominantly because they share identical belief systems.  Dean is willing to sacrifice everything for who he loves much of the same way that Cas will blindly sacrifice himself over and over for the person he loves most, Dean.  For both of them, love is everything. Mulder and Scully may work a case from polar opposite perspectives but at the very core both of them want the exact same thing: To find the truth and solve the case. Their ethics, professionalism, and goals match up perfectly.

Profound Bond: Ultimately, each of these pairings demonstrate the type of profound bond that can be formed among to people who share a life and a journey together. Even though Mulder/Scully eventually ventured into romantic territory, for half a decade they were nothing more than friends yet the bond they shared was deeper and more intimate than anything that two lovers could have.  Similarly, Dean and Castiel may not be lovers on the show, but their connection is deeper than anything else. Many people say that Dean will always put Sam first but think about this. Dean was pushed into a father role and sees Sam almost like a father sees his son. The bond they have formed over a lifetime. It makes sense that it’s as strong as any bond between father/son and brother/brother because that is what they are. Yet Dean and Castiel haven’t shared a lifetime together and still they are at the point where they will give anything for the other. Can you imagine this bond in another 10 years?

Anyway, all four characters are deeply complex so I’m sure that they can all related to each other in different ways, but off the top of my head, the similarities above are what I came up with. I’d love to hear how you view Dean as a Scully equivalent.

Wow! You’re amazing! Thank you so much for writing this all out. I’ve wanted to read people’s thoughts on this for ages. My remark that Dean is like Scully was very off the cuff, I was mainly thinking about Scully’s skepticism compared to Dean’s lack of faith and trust.

I was also kind of thinking of how Scully is somewhat emotionally hardened the way Dean is, whereas Mulder say’s what he thinks and feels and seems less likely to want to hide it, like Castiel, who sees no reason to hide what he’s thinking, unless it’s a plan of some sort, but emotionally he’s much more free than Dean.

I think it’s more in Dean and Scully’s nature to hide how they feel and less in Castiel and Mulder’s, who only hide things for the sake of a plan or the greater good. That’s my only real comparison I think. Though I know Castiel is suppose to be an unemotional angel but I actually think in many cases he shows more emotion than Dean simply because Dean knows how to hide it and that’s a human skill Castiel hasn’t fully come to grips with.

Though I think I’m thinking more of just a few different personality traits and not the full package. I completely agree with your thoughts! Actually when I first started re-watching The X Files last week I remember briefly thinking Castiel was like Scully, I dunno what veered me off course.

But really though, you are perfect and your thoughts are laid out so succinctly!
